The Lives of Rachel is a prequel to The Books of Rachel.
This richly detailed novel of family, of tradition, and of faith, sweeps across a thousand years to chronicle the lives of five women -- each named Rachel and each a rare human spirit.
In every generation of this proud and ancient Jewish family there is only one Rachel, the firstborn daughter. But the name is only part of Rachel's legacy. Each bearer of the name adds, in her own way, to the legend of strength and courage that is her birthright.
There is Rachel of Judea, who defies a half-mad and lustful king to save her husband's life. Rachel of Rome, who is sold into slavery, but rises up to take just revenge on her cruel and corrupt master. Rachel of Byzantius is a miraculous healer who risks death to stop the spreading horror of the plague. A Rachel plays a crucial part in the destiny of Arthurian England; another cleverly escapes a Rhineland pogrom.
The Lives of Rachel THE BOOKS OF RACHEL eBook JOEL GROSS
The historical novel spans seventeen centuries, from 188 BCE to 1484 CE. The family matriarchs carry the name, Rachel, and also share ownership of their inheritance of family jewels. The book, overflowing with history, encompasses five central stories, beginning with Rachel Kane visiting Jerusalem with her husband, in the 1980’s. The story then fades into the year, 168 BCE.Anti-Semitism, the binding thread which weaves throughout these stories, stems from the long held Christian belief that Jews killed Jesus, and are therefore, to be punished forever, as a people without God’s love or mercy. The rejection of Jesus’ teachings by Jews was changed to be Jesus’ rejection of his own people. The book is thoroughly rich in history and covers descriptively and factually, European anti-Semitism throughout the centuries.

The Lives of Rachel THE BOOKS OF RACHEL eBook JOEL GROSS Reviews
Really interesting. I really enjoyed this book. They were very barbaric and it seems everybody hated the Jews because they said they killed Jesus Christ. Read it you will really enjoy it.
The Lives of Rachel takes the reader on a whirlwind tour of times and places as her incarnations are discovered within her descendants over many decades. It has become tradition in her family to name the first girl child born into the extended family, Rachel, after the current Rachel passes on. Each of these Rachels, then, faces different times and situations than the last, yet each one shows the brilliance, competence, compassion and love of her predecessor. An engaging tapestry of times and history, The Lives of Rachel is a wonderful read. Recommended.
I really enjoyed reading this book, which was actually a collection of stories about several women all named Rachel, and descended from an original Rachel. Each story could stand alone, and was interesting in itself, but I found the idea of tying the stories together in such a way added a sense of history and connection that I found quite thought-provoking. It made me wonder about my own inherited traits, and my own connection to the past.
Once again, in this prequel to THE BOOKS.OF RACHEL, I was brought to tears by the story of connection. Moving backward and forward through time, Joel Gross connects the dots of the story of the Jewish people, their lives, cultures and dedications to the One God, all through the eyes and imagined lives of the many women named Rachel. There may be too much history for some, but the author leaves just enough mystery at the end of the story of each Rachel for the reader to decide what may have happened next. Great read!
This was a very powerful read for me! I did not know that Jewish people in Europe were so oppressed and forced to live in inhuman conditions in ghettos. What was most impressive was the spirit of the Jewish people who continued to pursue their goals, in spite of all the barriers.
This is not a light read. It requires some work. There are some very graphic portions that serve the purpose of describing just how bad some situations were. It's obviously fiction but well-done fiction in that you are able to get a real sense of each time period and the social pressures that occurred in each unique situation. I felt that the end was just sort of tacked on. I have not read the prequel/sequel Books of Rachel that is mentioned in some other reviews. Perhaps when read together the ending makes more sense. I felt that this novel expanded my knowledge base of the Jewish diaspora and gave me a sense of empathy for some of the prejudices the Jewish people have suffered through the millenia. It was a worthwhile read but now I'm ready for a little fluff.
Such a unique perspective. I was thoroughly engrossed from the beginning. One thing that struck me throughout the book was the issue of slavery. As an American it is very easy to see slavery as a sad part of our history and unique to us. It makes you remember the role slavery has portrayed historically. The nations that passed back and forth through history and slave owners turning into slaves and losing everything they had is frightening. They say history is written by the winners and there is truth in that. It is very easy to feel absolute sympathy for conquered nations forgetting at one time they were the conquerors. It's easy to feel like today the lines are written in stone regarding who lives where and what country belongs to what people but I'm sure that people felt that throughout history. The "We are too big to fail" is a simplistic view of our global geography and if history is any indication not true at all. I enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it. It is a long story and very engrossing. I love that it was written from a woman's perspective and how the book flowed throughout various times in history. Not a light read. Well written. Worth it.
